Curriculum

The school guidance curriculum is defined by the American School Counselor Association as a written program consisting of structured developmental lessons designed to assist students in achieving the ASCA National Standards and Competencies, and the state and school district academic goals. It is preventative and proactive, and it is presented to all students systematically through classroom or group activities. The purpose of the guidance curriculum is to provide all students with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level in the Academic Domain, the Career Domain and the Personal/Social Domain.

Among the responsibilities of the school counselor are the designing, planning, implementing and evaluating of the school counseling curriculum. The development of the school counseling curriculum is ongoing and includes a list of student competencies for each grade level and a clear scope and sequence of units of instruction. A needs assessment survey of students, staff and parents will provide timely areas of focus for the curriculum or guide counselors in curriculum changes. The counselor will integrate the guidance curriculum into the core curriculum by collaborating with teachers and aligning goals and themes. The school counseling curriculum is delivered through a variety of strategies such as: classroom instruction, group activities, interdisciplinary curriculum development or parent workshops and instruction. Student mastery of the counseling competencies will be assessed using tools such as pre and post testing, product creation or activity completion.
