Advocacy

Advocacy for the student is a primary role for Professional School Counselors. Advocacy for the student must be done as a result of, and within the ethical and legal standards set for our profession. In order for a school counselor to be an advocate for the student they must keep informed of ethical standards, laws and regulations to ensure that they are able to advocate for and protect the rights of the students in order to help them to succeed. In order for a counselor to be able to remove barriers to student learning, they must advocate for the students within those ethical standards, laws and regulations. These foundations also give the counselor the support to advocate for students. Counselors can advocate for students in the classroom, in parent teacher conferences, IEP's, at home, in the community, with post secondary institutions or at local, state and national political arenas.
