Advisory Council

An advisory council is a small group of people appointed to both advise and assist the school counseling program within a school district. The purpose of the committee is to help set program goals, provide support, offer advice, review activities and advocate for the school counseling program within the community. The committee provides two way communication between the school and the community.

Advisory council functions can vary. School counselors use data to analyze overall program effectiveness and to make decisions regarding changes in program content and delivery. The advisory council members, using their background and expertise, provide support, input and recommendations for program development and improvement throughout the process. The advisory council can be an effective tool to help build an excellent school counseling program.

Advisory council members should be knowledgeable of students' needs and aware of current national and state educational trends. Ideally, advisory council membership reflects the community's diversity. It should include representative stakeholders of the school counseling program. Suggested counseling program advisory council membership pools consist of:

Membership on the council will vary in number and composition depending on the size of the school system and the community it serves. It may be organized at the district or building level. The council should meet a minimum of twice a year.
